Sorry about the inconvenience. September 25, 2008 A Statement to Consumers Regarding Credit Union Federal Insurance—by Iowa Credit Union League President/CEO Patrick S. Jury “In these uncertain economic times, rest assured that credit union members’ funds in federally insured credit unions are just as safe as those insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). All 144 Iowa credit unions are federally insured. The federal insurance safety net at credit unions is provided by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. Government Agency. Members’ funds at the nation’s 7,972 federally insured credit unions are guaranteed under the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), to the same levels and safety as the FDIC insured accounts. NCUSIF, like the FDIC, is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. Like FDIC insurance, credit union savings are insured to at least $250,000. To estimate your total amount of federal insurance coverage at your credit union, visit the NCUA insurance calculator at http://webapps.ncua.gov/ins/. Credit unions are being recognized for not contributing to this current economic crisis, having remained faithful to sound lending practices, thus avoiding subprime lending. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that are locally owned and governed by their members. In short, the nearly one million credit union member accounts in Iowa and 90 million nationwide are just as safe and sound as those at FDIC-insured institutions. Not one penny of insured savings has ever been lost by a member of a federally insured credit union. |
